A school library has many books, yet the librarian noticed that storybooks returned late more often than science books. She made a simple rule: a late storybook costs one extra day of reading in the library, not a fine in coins. Children began to return books on time because they wanted their evenings free. Reading every day, she said, is how new words enter the mind — the way rain enters dry soil. The opposite of a 'clean' page, she joked, is a page torn or scribbled, not a page that has been read with care.
