Chipko means to hug. In the hills, villagers, many of them women, hugged trees so contractors could not cut them. They said the forest gave fodder, fuel and water, not only timber money for a few. The movement spread because people saw that bare slopes send mud into rivers when it rains. A synonym of 'protect' in this story is 'guard'; the opposite is 'destroy'. Children who learn Chipko, the writer says, learn that courage can be quiet and still be strong.
