NDA Two-Paper Structure
UPSC NDA exam has two papers: Mathematics (300 marks, 120 questions, 2.5 hours) and General Ability Test or GAT (600 marks, 150 questions, 2.5 hours). Both papers are on the same day with a break between them.
Mathematics requires speed and accuracy with Class 11–12 level problems. GAT combines English, General Knowledge, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, and Current Affairs in a single paper.
Mathematics Paper Tips
Attempt easier topics first — trigonometry, quadratic equations, and basic algebra questions are often quicker than calculus or complex geometry problems. Build momentum with 15–20 easy questions in the first 30 minutes.
Show rough work on the provided sheets even for MCQ — it prevents careless errors when you revisit flagged questions. Practise Mathematics PYQs on Setlgao with strict 150-minute timers.
- Start with algebra, trigonometry, and basic geometry
- Allocate 1–1.5 minutes per question on average
- Flag lengthy calculus problems for second pass
- Practise timed Mathematics PYQs on Setlgao
GAT Paper Tips
GAT has 50 English questions, 50 General Science questions, and 50 Social Studies / Current Affairs questions. English reading comprehension and vocabulary questions are often the fastest to score — attempt them first.
General Science questions test Class 10–12 basics. If you have prepared for NDA specifically, these are scoring. Social Studies and Current Affairs require consistent newspaper reading over months, not last-minute cramming.
