In a drought year Meena's village well showed a ring of dry stone. Elders remembered a johad — an earthen pond — that used to catch monsoon water and slowly fill the well. Young people cleared the silt and repaired the bund. The next June, after three good showers, the well's water rose by two steps on the baoli stairs. Children were told not to waste water while bathing. Saving water, the sarpanch said, is not a festival slogan; it is a daily habit as wise as locking the house at night.
